I always find it interesting that construction is so well utilised in student's early art experiences, yet as they get older the opportunities teachers provide become less frequent. Construction and modelling can be fabulous if you are well prepared and allow children time to complete tasks. They are not 'one off lessons'.
MILK BOTTLE FISH
These are labour intensive...BEWARE! Every few years I give these a go...and then when the class smells like sour milk, and glue and ripped up paper litters the floor...I remember why I waited so long to do them again! The end result is always worth the effort though!
MOSAIC
I always start with paper mosaic before moving onto tile and grout. Paper mosaic can easily be done in class, but cutting tiles and using grout and toxic glues requires careful supervision and is best completed in small groups. For these school mosaics, each class created a paper design and then two children from every room were selected to transform them into permanent works of art for our new native area walkway. It was a little chaotic but the mosaic works do add visual interest to our walkway and the pupils loved being involved!

MODELLING COMPOUND BONE CARVINGS
These are a quick and easy modelling project. We studied bone carvings and their meanings, then created our own using modelling compound. I have also done this activity with salt dough which works equally as well.
