Apanui Murals

These massive outdoor murals brighten the Apanui school walls. I worked with pupils aged 8-11 to paint these, after designing images I felt reflected the local birds and culture. The quirky landscapes depict local Whakatane scenes, including the historic Whakatane hotel, river, board mill, Tois Pa, and Wairaka marae.

They won the 2013 National Mural Masterpieces competition, the second time I have worked alongside primary aged pupils to claim this title. View my page on murals for further insight.

Flax at Sunset

These works were commissioned for a wedding gift. They were based on photographs taken at the wedding of the sun setting over the hills.
Acrylic on canvas. Private Collection. NZ.

Shore of stranded marram
Stagnate, gentle moon
erecting to cast shadows on the sun.

Adament and scared
Of sea that swallows sky
and dark that folds like skin.

For my Girls

POHUTUKAWA - Acrylic on canvas. Private Collection.

FLAX / TUI - Acrylic on canvas. Private collection.

I was inspired by a friend who had personalised artworks for each of her children. I wanted to create a gift for each of my girls, that represented their personalities through art, nature, and poetry.

KATE

The Tui rests upon your arms o sing it's chorus,
and you too, sing with uninhibited joy.
You're full of creative promise.
With fiery determination, you reach towards the sky...
making your bright and striking mark upon the landscape.
Resilient and strong
you will weather any storm.

Karyn

RILEY

Your hair shines in the dappled sunlight
like the golden tips of a pohutukawa.
We know of your treasures.
You hide them away,
sheltering from the weather
until you are ready to shine.
Then, your fiery beauty revealed,
you take centre stage...
filling our world with colour.

People -2005

INTERTWINED
Acrylic on canvas. Private collection.

Intertwined

Lying
in your arms,
Her body measured in fingerprints
and her soul in excuses,
when on waking she finds...
she is living upon the tail end
of somebody else's dream.

Her dreams are not
those sweet things forgotten upon rising,
nor reality forgotten
as she lies there drenched in sleep.
Yet clutched beneath her breast she holds
a bird, perched, waiting to fly...
to places where people hold hands,
not hearts

In the Sad Eyes of Strangers - 1995

Drawing - doodle. Black ink on paper.

In the sad eyes of strangers
there lies a gentle creature...weeping.
Huge and unmasked he tells
(with the beauty of a flower not yet opened),
the stories lovers ask to hear...but will not listen to.

And scrawling memories on un-burst bubbles
of a planet to which he once belonged...
He tells of a place of great lyrical tenderness,
where people...who on liking where they are,
can grow roots and stay there!

Freedom 2005

Oil sticks on board.

Freedom has many expressions.
You have found it
in the unchained souls of heroes,
who walk naked through your mind.

Let the heroes run wild!
Stopping only in forests
that smell not of yesterday,
Where passion is so thick
it drips from lovers tongues.

Omamari Bliss - 2000

Acrylic on canvas. Private commission Omamari.

So this is bliss...Omamari
The salt, the sand, the surf, the sea
The lazy days that never end
The fishing trip amongst good friends

Out in wetsuits, casting lines
Sunbathing when weather's fine
The salt, the sand, the surf, the sea
Yes this is bliss...Omamari

Maungawhau- Mount Eden - 1993

Oil on paper on board. Project for teacher's training college exhibition.

You scatter memories of stillborn children...Maungawhau,
and naked still
your crevices have been explored
by the fingers, souls, and minds of many...
who cradle you
Tapu
beneath their breast.

Mountain...
your eruptions are denied.
The afterbirth of a child the experts call extinction
stir deep within your womb,
As history, poetry, and music...
drip from the walls of your crater.
